Laurie Powell BDS FCGDent DPDS FHEA – Dentist

Registered with GDC 69402

Laurie qualified from Sheffield University Dental School in 1993. He enjoys all aspects of general dentistry but particularly working with composite resin on front teeth and removable prosthetics. He has been working at the Causeway Dental Practice since 2000 and took over ownership in 2005. He is the current chair of Oxfordshire Local Dental Committee, a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry and a member of the British Dental Association.

He is very active in postgraduate study and was a  part-time clinical lecturer at Bristol University Dental School for over five years. He was awarded the Schottlander Prize for outstanding achievement in prosthetic dentistry whilst studying for his postgraduate diploma in 2013. He is a keen advocate of dental research in primary care and is currently a national research champion. He is currently a principal investigator in the SCRiPT and PIP studies, being run by Dundee University, testing two treatments for deep tooth decay and an alternative way to treat toothache. He is delighted to have been appointed as an academic clinical fellow at the University of Manchester to take his research interests further.

He lives in Oxford with his family and enjoys live music, cycling and park run – especially the coffee afterwards.

As an Antibiotic Guardian he has made a pledge. If a patient with dental pain requests antibiotics, Laurie will explain why antibiotics are not always appropriate and discuss methods of controlling symptoms rather than prescribing antibiotics as a first course of action
